What Is a DSP? How a Demand-Side Platform Works

What Is a DSP?

A DSP (Demand-Side Platform) is software that enables advertisers and media buying agencies to automatically purchase and manage inventory across multiple ad exchanges and publisher networks through a single interface.

With DSP technology, instead of negotiating separately with each website or publisher, advertisers bid in real-time auctions—within milliseconds—on users across the entire open internet who match the audience criteria they have defined.

How Does a DSP Work, and What Data Does It Use?

When placing bids, DSP platforms combine multi-layered data sources:

  1. First-Party Data: Data originating from your company’s own CRM database, website pixels, and mobile app.
  2. Contextual Data: The subject matter of the article on the page (e.g., “Real Estate Investment,” “Economy”).
  3. Geo & Device Data: The user’s city, the device they are using (iOS/Android), and their connection type.
  4. Third-Party Data: Segment information purchased from data providers (DMPs).

The leading DSP providers in the market include:

  • Google Display & Video 360 (DV360): The leading DSP, offering extensive inventory for enterprise brands.
  • The Trade Desk (TTD): A global platform distinguished by its independent and transparent model.
  • Amazon DSP: A platform that leverages Amazon’s massive e-commerce purchase data.
  • RTB House: A retargeting DSP built around deep learning.

DSP vs. Google Ads / Meta Ads

Within the Google Ads or Meta Ads dashboards, you can only advertise on their own networks (YouTube, Display, Instagram, etc.). With an independent DSP, however, you can bid from a single hub across the entire digital ecosystem—from newspaper websites to mobile apps, and from Connected TV (CTV) channels to digital out-of-home billboards (DOOH).
